Back to School


A rainy Wednesday, the spare-parts dealer in a 1950s courtyard, and the new tenant next-door are to blame for it. Bernd Dörr discovered a pile of old gym mats and a few broken pieces of gymnastics equipment on the side of the road for garbage pick-up one day.

GYM-CLASS-MYTH


All he needed was a suitable name and an interesting image. Markus Kreykenbohm, a retro advocate and the right-hand man of the gymnastics father, took on the task of creating and communicating the brand and “mounted the right vaulting horse” with his choice of photographer Maria Brinkop. The brand in its communication wonderfully conjures up associations of gyms and gymnastics. The current product catalogue, printed on “Circle” recycled paper, shows photos playing on gym-class clichés in a magnificently ironic way, combined with historical illustrations of gymnastics equipment. On the homepage, old black-and-white film clips are scattered throughout the photos. The designer even used scented varnish to give the catalogue the smell of used leather. The history of a brand could hardly be told more consistently.

TYPOLYRICS


The concept of TypoLYRICS comes from a rubric by the same name in Slanted magazine and can be described as an experimental arrangement combining music, song lyrics and typography into a visual.

The publication brings together 170 contributions


specially created by as many graphic and font designers, the sum of which is an impressive whole. In eleven chapters, various music genres, from classical to krautrock and swing to punk, are confronted with customary typefaces and contemporary font designs. The combinations posed interesting challenges to the designers invited to participate, beyond mere personal tastes and visual preferences. The result is a collection of unique design experiments between sound and font that is well worth seeing.

editor-in-chief of HYPERLINK Spex magazine, and DJ / producer Frank Wiedemann underpin and comment on the TypoLYRICS. What’s more, interviews with Dirk Rudolph, StyloRouge and Invisible Creature offer insight into their professional lives and their experiences between acoustic and visual design. The book is available in a hardcover edition – a special feature is the pigmented paper by Mondi which alternates from chapter to chapter (IQ color, 120 g/qm) and the varying spot colours. Typeface


Subsequent to graduating in 2004 he lived and worked in various cities including: Stuttgart(ger), Pforzheim (ger), Barcelona (esp), Würzburg (ger), Karlsruhe (ger) and Sydney (aus). Today he s an illustrator, graphic designer and visual artist on a variety of projects for various clients. He lives Stuttgart.

RAUSCHEN typeface


Inspiration for this typeface came from the static on television screens. It has been created through the use of a modular grid system with circular dots. The individual letters, which consist of small rectangles, form part of the grid. The font style is determined by the size of the dots in the grid.

The typeface attains a different form of visual white noise


depending on which font style is chosen. This in turn changes when the typeface is observed either from close range, from afar, or from the side. One of the font styles functions without the dots in the grid. This shows how successfully the individual characters of this high quality font have been optimised. The Rauschen-booklet received the certificate of typographic excellence fromthe Type Directors Club New York. The typeface has 5 different font styles and is distributed by Volcano Type. The RAUSCHEN typeface is used in HKS COLOURMATCH 9.

YEEHAW


During his studies he came into contact with Magma in Kontakt. The encounter awakened his interest in fonts. He now teaches typography and font design at the Stuttgart State Academy of Art and Design.

GRINGO typeface


Apart from his work at the academy, he also works as a freelancer. Together with Tobias Koch he developed the Internet presence for Volcano Type. Peter Brugger’s work has received numerous awards and been featured in a variety of publications. The GRINGO typeface is used in HKS COLOURMATCH 9.

Handbook for Spies


This book parodies the subject of espionage, particularly in its heyday during the Cold War. It deals with the play between information and disinformation, between lies and deception.

JAPANESE BINDING


The book’s real attraction is its design. It is made with a Japanese binding, meaning the individual pages are folded and closed on the fore margin. Since the edge is perforated, however, the individual sheets serve as secret envelopes whose contents are only revealed when opened. The book likewise plays with materials, e.g., mirrors (chromolux paper) or information that is barely perceptible at first glance (black ink on black cardboard). Ultimately, the book is like espionage itself: conspiratorial, subtile – and totally nuts. Conspiratorially mentored by Mr. Bernhard Helzel (code name Peter Schaller) and Mr. Peter Schaller (code name Bernhard Helzel).

BRANDON GROTESQUE is a sans serif type family of six weights plus matching italics.

FUNCTIONAL LOOK


It was designed by Hannes von Döhren in 2009/10. Influenced by the geometric-style sans serif faces that were popular during the 1920s and 30s, the fonts are based on geometric forms that have been optically corrected for better legibility.

FACTS


BRANDON GROTESQUE has a functional look with a warm touch. While the thin and the black weights are great performers in display sizes the light, regular and medium weights are well suited to longer texts. The small x-height and the restrained forms lend it a distinctive elegance. BRANDON GROTESQUE is equipped for complex, professional typography. The OpenType fonts have an extended character set to support Central and Eastern European as well as Western European languages.

EIGENARTEN


One person has to put on his right shoe first, another is obsessed with counting stairs. All of which is very human. But when habits become compulsive, the smallest act is embedded in a complex network of rules, becoming a considerable burden.

ARTIG


My bachelor’s project “eigen/artig” deals with routines in various forms and intensity. The quirk as a daily phenomenon versus the compulsive disorder as its pathological counterpart. Other peoples’ quirks are strange and entertaining at once. The book eigen is accordingly colorful, boisterous and garish. Every quirk takes up an individually designed two-page spread. In the book “artig”, information about compulsive disorders is highlighted using a minimalist typography and color scheme. Pages of informative text are interrupted by illustrations whose human portrayal “lend a face” to the various types of compulsive disorders.
